National Farm Safety Week
This week is National Farm Safety Week as proclaimed by the President.
“As we celebrate National Farm Safety and Health Week, we recognize the tremendous contributions of these individuals and rededicate ourselves to ensuring their safety and health at all times” Barack Obama.
Out in Iowa, The National Educational Center for Agricultural Safety has focused on ATV safety with the theme: Work Smart, Play Safe. Their website lists a number of safety brochures that cover all sorts of topics including a safety checklist for ATVs.
And here in Vermont, the lesson was brought home with a news story of an ATV accident. Four people, including a 4 year old, were riding on an ATV without helmets. When they pulled off of the trail on to the road, they collided with a motorcycle. None of the people on the ATV were wearing helmets.
The ATV safety institute has online safety courses that you can take, and in Vermont the laws around usage of ATV’s can be found in the Vermont Statutes, Title 23, Chapter 31. Locally there is the Vermont All Terrain Vehicle Sportsman’s Association (VASA) that has links to online safety material and offers classes for 12-18 year olds. The Vermont State Police also have online safety courses.
